What to Pack for Cairo, Egypt in Winter

When most people picture Egypt, they imagine sweltering heat and blazing sunshine. But winter in Cairo (December–February) is pleasantly mild during the day and surprisingly chilly in the mornings and evenings. Average highs are around 18–22°C, but nights can dip to 10°C or below.

Clothing for Day-to-Day Cairo

  • Jeans or comfortable pants – My personal go-to in Cairo is jeans. They’re durable, don’t need washing often, and two pairs are enough. I like to alternate between them. If you don’t like travelling with jeans (they’re heavy and take a while to dry), pack two pairs of your favourite pants instead.
  • Layering tops – Even though days are sunny, the air can feel crisp. I often wore thermals under a jumper in December and January.
  • Warm outerwear – A puffer jacket or warm coat is essential for cold mornings and evenings.
  • Occasional t-shirt weather – Some afternoons can be warm enough for short sleeves, so include 1–2 t-shirts for flexibility.
  • Comfy loungewear – Pack one set of comfortable clothes for lounging around your hotel or wearing on the flight.
  • A nice outfit – Casual outfits are fine for most activities, but if you want special photos or plan to go somewhere upscale, bring one outfit you love.

Footwear

  • Walking sneakers – Cairo involves a lot of walking, often on uneven pavements, so comfort is key. I usually bring one nice-looking pair of sneakers for everyday wear.
  • Supportive trainers/runners – For sightseeing days with extra walking, I pack my Nike or Allbirds running shoes.
  • No need for heels – The city is not heel-friendly, and you won’t miss them.

Accessories & Extras

  • Scarf or shawl – Adds warmth and can be handy for modesty when visiting mosques.
  • Sunglasses – The winter sun can still be bright.

Dress Code Considerations

In Cairo, it’s best to dress modestly, especially in local neighbourhoods and religious sites. While you don’t need to cover your hair unless entering a mosque, longer pants and tops that cover your shoulders are more respectful and will help you blend in. In Winter, this shouldn’t be an issue!
